A Full-Length Dragon, Pierced by a Pin
This Viking hair slide combines an openwork plate in the shape of a winged dragon — elongated body, open wings, coiled tail — with a transverse pin featuring an engraved Celtic knot on the head. The tension between the two holds the hairstyle in place, without springs or clips. Find it in our collection of Viking hair slides and hair jewelry.
For a more stylized dragon and a narrower plate, see the stylized dragon hair slide.
What Sets This Hair Slide Apart
The design is figurative where the radius is primarily geometric.
- A full-length dragon: wings, legs, and tail are distinct, rather than dissolving into an interlace.
- An openwork plate: the voids allow hair to pass through and lighten a wide piece.
- Celtic knot on the pin head: the only visible part of the rod once inserted, and it is decorated.
- No mechanism: nothing that can wear out or break.
If your hair lacks the volume for a pin, the filigree clip hair slide holds differently.

Did you know?
The Scandinavians took such care of their hair that it left an impression on their neighbors. The English chronicler John of Wallingford criticized the Danes living in England for combing their hair every day, bathing on Saturdays, and changing their clothes frequently — habits he deemed frivolous, and which he believed explained their success with English women. Excavations confirm the comb: it is the most frequently found personal item in Viking graves, carved from deer antler, often stored in a case, and found with both men and women.

Brooch or hair barrette: which one to choose?
| Type | Where it is worn | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Garment brooch (fibula) | On a cloak, a shawl, a coat or a jacket lapel. | These are the largest pieces in the range. Six close with a straight pin and a clasp; two are penannular: an open ring locked by the tension of the fabric, with no spring to wear out. |
| Barrette with a hair stick this product | In a bun, a braid or a half-up ponytail. | Two pieces: the plate sits on the hair, the stick goes through the lock and holds everything in place. You need enough hair for the stick to go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain. |
| Light barrette or clip | On medium-length hair, including fine hair. | The filigree models have a small chain that holds the stick; the flat barrettes close with a clip and need no minimum length. These are the most discreet pieces and the easiest to put in. |
| Medallion barrette | Flat on a half-up ponytail or a low bun. | A solid disc that sits on the gathered lock instead of going through it. It is the shape that needs the least hair length, and the only one that shows a scene rather than an ornament. |
How to wear it
There is no size to choose, but you need enough hair. These pieces hold by the lock they go through: with hair shorter than shoulder length, the hold becomes uncertain.
How to put in a stick barrette, in three steps: gather your hair into a bun or a half-up ponytail, place the plate over it, then slide the stick into the left slot, through the lock, and out through the right slot. The lock caught between the two holds everything, not a spring.
The sticks on their own (moon, leaves, sword) go straight into a twisted bun, without a plate. The fuller the bun, the better they hold.
Clip barrettes need no minimum length: they are the only ones suited to short or fine hair.
If it slips: add a discreet hair tie under the plate to give the stick something to go through. The four filigree models also have a small chain that holds the stick, so it does not fall if it comes out.
Care: dry cloth. Avoid water, hairspray and styling sprays, which dull the finish and build up in the hollows of the metal.
How do you put in a stick barrette?
In three steps. Gather the section of hair or the bun, lay the plate flat on top, then slide the stick through at an angle: it goes into the hair on one side and comes out on the other, and it is the tension between the plate and the stick that holds it. No spring, no clip.
Does it hold in fine hair?
No, not well. This design needs a mass of hair to pass through. In straight, fine hair the stick will slip — our lightweight clip barrettes are a better fit in that case.
Is the dragon openwork?
Yes. The gaps between the wings, the body and the tail let the hair show through, which visually lightens a fairly wide plate.
What does the design on the head of the stick show?
A closed Celtic knot, engraved on the small disc that caps the end of the stick. It is the part that stays visible once the barrette is in, on the side where the stick comes out.
