A Bucranium With Curved Horns
These bull skull earrings take up the classic bucranium: the elongated brow, the hollow eye sockets, and two long horns that curve upward. The bone is given a patinated surface rather than a mirror polish, which heightens the dried-out look of the motif. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
For a human skull rather than an animal one, our horned skull studs cross the two registers.
What Sets This Pair Apart
On a bucranium, everything comes down to the spread of the horns: set too close together, the motif becomes unreadable.
- Wide-open horns: the span gives the motif its recognizable silhouette, even from a distance.
- Patinated surface: the steel has a matte treatment, which avoids a plasticky shine and brings the look closer to bone.
- Push-back clasp: a single centered post, so the stud stays level.
- Stainless steel: the slender horns don't bend and don't oxidize.
For a whole animal rather than a skull, the lion head ear cuff stays within the bestiary.

Did you know?
In Norse cosmogony, the first living being after the giant Ymir is neither a god nor a man: it is a cow. The Gylfaginning tells how Audhumla emerged from the melting ice at the same time as Ymir, and how four rivers of milk flowed from her udders to feed him. She herself fed by licking the blocks of salty ice — and from this licking a man gradually emerged, Búri, the grandfather of Odin. In other words, the entire divine lineage of the North begins because a bovine needed salt. She is not a bull, and this is not a skull: but she is the only bovine in Scandinavian mythology, and she holds a place in it that few gods can match.

Do the horns catch on clothing?
No. The tips curve inward and are rounded, so the risk stays low. As with any piece with points, be careful when taking off a chunky-knit sweater.
How wide is the design?
About one and a half centimeters from horn to horn. It is a noticeable size, one of the widest among our studs.
Does the bucranium have a Norse meaning?
Not as a decorative motif. However, the only bovine in Scandinavian mythology, the primordial cow Audhumla, plays a founding role in it: by licking the salty ice, she frees Odin's ancestor.
Will the matte finish become shiny with wear?
Areas that rub may lighten slightly over time, which heightens the contrast between the recesses and the raised parts. Many people find the piece looks better for it.
