A Warm Stone in a Square Frame
These champagne zircon stud earrings hold a round stone with golden glints in a square four-prong setting. The contrast between the roundness of the stone and the angles of the frame is what gives the piece its character: it is geometry, not just a setting. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
The same square design appears, in a deeper shade, on our square citrine studs.
What Sets This Pair Apart
Champagne is a tricky shade: it has to stay warm without turning a garish yellow.
- Square frame: the right angles frame the stone and make it look larger than in a round setting of the same diameter.
- Short prongs: discreet enough not to swallow the stone, firm enough to hold it without any play.
- Push-back closure: a post through the ear and a back stopper, with nothing sticking out or snagging.
- Stainless steel: the coolness of the metal sets off the warm shade, and it doesn't tarnish.
For a warm stone in an ornate rather than geometric setting, see our ornate setting studs.

Did you know?
A faceted stone like this one would have been impossible in the Viking Age, and not for lack of skill: the technique didn't exist. Until the end of the Middle Ages, European gems were polished as cabochons — a smooth, domed surface that gives a soft glow but no sparkle. Faceting, which cuts the stone into reflective planes, only appeared in Europe around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries; a guild of gem cutters is documented in Nuremberg as early as 1375, then in Bruges shortly after. The goldsmiths of the North therefore worked with color and cloisonné, never with sparkle.

Is the champagne shade closer to gold or to clear?
It sits between the two: the stone is clear but warmed by a golden tint, which makes it noticeably less cold than a colorless zircon without tipping it into yellow.
Is this style suitable for work?
Yes. It's one of the most neutral styles in the collection: a small stone, a geometric frame, no motif. It gets noticed without drawing attention.
Can the square frame be uncomfortable in bed?
The corners are softened and the stud sits flat against the lobe, so you forget it's there on the pillow. It's one of the few styles you can keep on at night without thinking about it.
Is the stone glued or set?
It's held by four prongs folded over its edge, not by glue. It's a mechanical setting, the kind that stands up best to time and water.
