Of every Viking shield, almost always just one piece remains
A black round shield, slightly domed, crossed by eight gold-tone bands that radiate from the center and are studded with nails. In the middle, a hemispherical boss. Forty-four centimeters in diameter.

What sets this piece apart
- The bands radiate from the boss: eight regular spokes, a layout that structures the face instead of decorating it at random.
- The boss is a true bulge: it stands out from the plane of the shield, as on the originals, where it sheltered the hand.
- Forty-four centimeters: a manageable size, closer to a stage shield than to a reenactment round shield.
- It is not a weapon: PU foam with a rigid core, with no hard edges. This piece is made for costume, the stage and the wall.

Did you know?
Open any Scandinavian excavation report and you will always see the same thing: all that remains of the shield is the boss. This iron dome at the center was the only metal part of the object; the linden or fir boards disappeared into the soil within a few decades. So graves are found where a rusted iron disc lies alone, surrounded by nothing — and it is from this single remnant that we deduce a shield was once there. A detail the boss reveals and that is often forgotten: the hand did not pass through arm straps, as in the Middle Ages. It gripped a simple bar inside the hollow of the boss, with the whole hand.
To go further, our feature on the Viking shield details its construction and its use in combat, and our weapons section completes the kit.

How was a Viking shield held?
With the whole hand, by a bar running across the hollow of the boss (umbo) — not by straps on the forearm as on medieval shields.
Why is only the boss ever found?
Because it was the only iron part. The wooden boards decompose in the ground within a few decades.
Can this shield be used in combat?
No. PU foam with a rigid core: it is a costume and decorative piece.
How big is it?
About 44 cm in diameter. The Scandinavian originals were more like 80 to 95 cm.
