Black on blue — in heraldry, that's a mistake
A heater shield with a pointed base, its blue field showing a pronounced grain, charged with a black dragon in relief — wings spread, four legs, curled tail. The rim is dotted with evenly spaced silver-tone studs.

What sets this piece apart
- The dragon is in relief, not painted: wings, scales and claws stand several millimeters proud of the field. That is what catches the light on a wall.
- The shape is a heater shield, not a round shield: pointed base, straight shoulders — the silhouette of European heraldry, not that of the North.
- PU foam with a rigid core: it weighs next to nothing, hangs on the wall from a simple hook and won't hurt anyone in a crowd.
- It is not a weapon: PU foam with a rigid core, no hard edges. This piece is made for costume, stage and wall.

Did you know?
Medieval heralds would wince at this shield. The fundamental rule of heraldry, known as the rule of tincture, forbids placing a color on a color: you have to alternate with a metal, gold or silver. And sable (black) on azure (blue) is exactly the forbidden case — both are colors. The rare old coats of arms that broke the rule had a special name, armes à enquerre: literally, arms “to be inquired about”, because one had to ask the reason for the breach. The most famous are those of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, gold on silver.
To go further, our feature on the Viking shield shows what the round shape that came before this one looked like, and the weapons section completes the kit.

Is this shield Viking?
No. The heater shield with its pointed base appeared in Europe around the 13th century, three centuries after the Viking Age, which used only the round shield.
What is it made of?
PU foam with a rigid core. It is light, cannot hurt anyone and hangs on the wall with a simple hook.
Can it be used for combat?
No. It is a costume and decorative piece, not contact equipment.
Why do you say black on blue is a mistake?
Because the rule of tincture forbids placing one color on another without a metal between them. Old coats of arms that broke this rule were called “arms of inquiry.”
