Without its leather rim, a shield splits in three blows
A golden ochre round shield, engraved with a ring of knotwork and stylized beasts around a boss ringed in light metal. The rim is outlined with a light-colored band, and a leather strap runs across the face.

What sets this piece apart
- The knotwork runs in a ring: the pattern circles the boss instead of covering the whole face, which leaves the field room to breathe.
- The boss is ringed in light metal: the contrast with the ochre marks the center and gives depth to the relief.
- The rim band was not originally decorative: on real shields, it was what kept the planks from splitting.
- It is not a weapon: PU foam with a rigid core, no hard edges. This piece is made for costume, stage and wall.

Did you know?
The rim of a Viking shield was not a finishing touch: it was the part that kept it alive. A Scandinavian shield is made of butted planks only six to ten millimeters thick, glued edge to edge — an assembly that bursts apart at the first serious blow. What holds it together is the rawhide rim stitched all the way around: as it dries, the hide shrinks and presses the planks against one another, like the hoop of a barrel. Experimental archaeology has measured it: reconstructions based on the Gokstad shields show that a shield without a rim splits after a few blows, while the same shield with a rim withstands dozens.
To go further, our feature on the Viking shield details its construction and use in combat, and the weapons section completes the kit.

What was the rim of a Viking shield for?
To hold the planks together. The rawhide stitched around the edge shrinks as it dries and compresses the assembly, which increases its resistance to blows tenfold.
Is this shield a faithful replica?
No, it's an interpretation. The originals measured 80 to 95 cm and were made of wood; this one measures 44 cm and is made of PU foam.
Can it be carried on the arm?
It has a strap. It's light enough to carry all evening without getting tired.
Is it suitable as wall decor?
Yes, that's actually its best use: being light, it hangs from a simple fastener.
