Ingwaz, the god Ing — the force that ripens before blooming
A lozenge with a cross-bar, engraved in an oval cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of patinated bronze. Ingwaz bears the name of a god, Ing or Yngvi, whom sources associate with fertility and from whom a Swedish royal dynasty, the Ynglings, took its name.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The rune of contained potential: that which is in germ and waiting for its moment — not yet visible, but already present.
- It exists in two attested designs, the simple lozenge and the elongated double-cross shape; it is this second variant that is engraved here.
- A bead to thread, not a clasp: the bead is slipped onto the lock before braiding. The fullness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Hole diameter of approximately 6 mm: the only criterion that really matters. It must be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock.

Did you know?
The Anglo-Saxon rune poem tells of a migration: "Ing was first seen among the East Danes, then he departed eastward across the wave; his chariot followed him." This god who travels east in a chariot is the same figure as the Freyr of the Norse sources — and the kings of Sweden claimed to be his descendants. It is rare for a rune to bear the name of a dynasty.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards with supporting sources, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Ingwaz rune mean?
Ingwaz bears the name of the god Ing, or Yngvi, associated with fertility and lineage. It stands for potential in the seed, the force that ripens before it shows itself.
Why are there two different shapes for this rune?
Both are attested: a simple diamond and an elongated shape with a double crossbar. It is the second variant that appears on this bead.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
It belongs to the Elder Futhark, which predates the Viking Age. The Younger Futhark, the one found on runestones, did not keep it in this form.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
About 6 mm: a medium-density beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
