Chainmail That Weighs as Much as a Sweatshirt
This Viking sweatshirt mimics a full suit of armor: a domed leather breastplate engraved with an Yggdrasil, chainmail on the shoulders and arms, crossed straps, and a plate skirt on the lower part of the garment. Everything is printed, ring by ring, on a soft textile knit. Find it in our collection of Viking sweatshirts.
The leather-only version, without mail, can be found on the leather armor model.
A Print, Not Armor — Let's Be Clear About That
This garment plays on illusion, and an illusion is quickly disappointing when it isn't announced. So, to be clear: the surface is perfectly smooth. No metal rings, no rivets, no relief, no attached pieces. What you see is an image printed flat onto fabric. The effect works from a distance and in photos; up close, you can see it is a print. We would rather you know this before ordering than upon opening the package.
What Sets This Sweatshirt Apart
The chainmail trompe-l'œil is the most demanding: a poorly drawn ring pattern becomes a grid.
- Rings drawn one by one: the mail retains its irregularity and curvature on the shoulders, where a simple repeated weave would have produced a checkerboard pattern.
- Two levels of illusion: leather and metal, with distinct light treatments — matte leather, shiny rings.
- An engraved Yggdrasil: the breastplate bears a motif within the motif, giving the whole piece a depth that the leather-only model does not have.
- The comfort of a sweatshirt: no straps, no weight, no friction.

Did you know?
A Viking chainmail shirt represented several weeks of work: between twenty and thirty thousand rings, each drawn through a die, coiled, cut, and riveted by hand. The resulting price reserved it for a minority—Scandinavian burials have yielded only a handful of fragments, compared to thousands of axes. The Gjermundbu mail shirt, the only one known to be in a nearly complete state, was found in a tomb that also contained the only entire Viking helmet discovered to date. The same man possessed the two rarest pieces in Scandinavian archaeology.

Which print style to choose?
| Print type | What it looks like | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Placed design | The body of the sweatshirt stays plain: the design is limited to the chest, the sleeves and the back. | When you want to wear the garment without the design ruling your day. It is also the only model available in fourteen color and ink combinations. |
| All-over print | The fabric is printed before assembly: front, back, sleeves, hood and right up to the seams. | When the garment is meant to be seen. Fifteen different designs, all in polyester, from 2XS to 4XL. |
| All-over print, finer artwork this product | The same full coverage, but a more detailed drawing and an acrylic, polyester and elastane knit. | When you look at a garment up close before buying it, or if polyester alone feels too stiff. Sizes up to 5XL, and up to 6XL for the zip-up model. |
Choosing your size
The manufacturer provides no size chart for the sweatshirts in this range. We would rather tell you so than publish a measurement chart we would have made up.
The method that never fails: take a sweatshirt you already wear and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Write this number down: it is your benchmark. You are comparing one garment with another, without going through a theoretical size, and theoretical sizes are precisely what vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the same size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.
A word about the letters. Beyond XXL, these labels follow no common standard: a 4XL, 5XL or 6XL has no fixed equivalent, and the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.
Is there any real metal mail on it?
No, none. The rings, leather, rivets and laces are entirely printed on a knit fabric. The surface is smooth and the garment weighs as much as an ordinary sweatshirt.
What does the central design show?
A domed leather breastplate bearing an engraved Yggdrasil, framed by chain mail that covers the shoulders, the arms and the bottom of the garment.
Is the effect convincing in photos?
Yes, that is actually its strong point. In real life and at close range, you can tell right away that it is a print — we prefer to say so before you buy.
Can it be worn to a festival?
That is where it works best: the effect carries at a distance, and it is neither as heavy nor as hot as real mail.
