She Who Chooses the Slain
This Viking sweatshirt is the most figurative in the range: a valkyrie facing forward, hair braided, holding her sword raised before her, with a Vegvísir disc in the background. The sleeves are covered in printed chainmail, and a frieze of pine trees completes the bottom of the garment. The whole thing is in black and white, with no color. Find it in our Viking sweatshirt collection.
For a male figure treated in the same palette, see the Odin and ravens model.
What Sets This Sweatshirt Apart
A realistic face on a garment is risky: if poorly printed, it becomes a blurry mask.
- A defined face: the features remain sharp despite the size and high contrast—this is what separates an illustration from a smudge.
- Three layers of scenery: the figure in the foreground, the chainmail on the arms, the forest at the bottom. The garment has depth, not just a pattern.
- The only female figure: out of the twenty-six sweatshirts in the range, this is the only one to depict a warrior rather than a god, an animal, or an ornament.
- Full black and white: no color, which makes the garment easier to match than a polychrome print.
To stick with chainmail but without a figure, the chainmail trompe-l'œil makes it the main subject.

Did you know?
The word valkyrja literally means "she who chooses the slain" (valr, those dead in battle; kjósa, to choose). Female figurines with drinking horns found in Scandinavia—such as the one from Hårby, discovered in Denmark in 2012, which holds a sword and a shield—have long been identified as valkyries, but the attribution remains debated: nothing excludes the possibility that they are high-ranking women, or a ritual figure we no longer know how to name. That is the fate of many Nordic objects: the name comes from texts, the objects do not speak.

Which print style to choose?
| Print type | What it looks like | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Placed design | The body of the sweatshirt stays plain: the design is limited to the chest, the sleeves and the back. | When you want to wear the garment without the design ruling your day. It is also the only model available in fourteen color and ink combinations. |
| All-over print this product | The fabric is printed before assembly: front, back, sleeves, hood and right up to the seams. | When the garment is meant to be seen. Fifteen different designs, all in polyester, from 2XS to 4XL. |
| All-over print, finer artwork | The same full coverage, but a more detailed drawing and an acrylic, polyester and elastane knit. | When you look at a garment up close before buying it, or if polyester alone feels too stiff. Sizes up to 5XL, and up to 6XL for the zip-up model. |
Choosing your size
The manufacturer provides no size chart for the sweatshirts in this range. We would rather tell you so than publish a measurement chart we would have made up.
The method that never fails: take a sweatshirt you already wear and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Write this number down: it is your benchmark. You are comparing one garment with another, without going through a theoretical size, and theoretical sizes are precisely what vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the same size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.
A word about the letters. Beyond XXL, these labels follow no common standard: a 4XL, 5XL or 6XL has no fixed equivalent, and the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.
Who is the figure shown?
A valkyrie, the warrior woman who chooses the slain in battle in Norse mythology. She's shown facing forward, sword raised in front of her, hair braided.
What are the patterns on the sleeves?
Printed chain mail, covering both arms and running up to the shoulders. The bottom of the garment has a frieze of stylized fir trees.
Is the design realistic or graphic?
The face is rendered realistically, unlike most prints in the collection, which stick to knotwork. It's the most figurative piece in the series.
Does the Vegvísir appear too?
Yes, a Vegvísir disc sits behind the sword, like a halo. It's an addition made for the artwork, not a mythological element.
