A Column of Knots, From Collar to Hem
This Viking sweatshirt is built around a single axis: a column of white interlace runs down the center of the torso, from the collar to the hem, and every knot on the left side finds its exact mirror on the right. The sleeves repeat the motif in vertical bands. Black background, white lines, no colors. Find it in our Viking sweatshirt collection.
For interlace treated diagonally and in color, see the gold and turquoise model.
What Sets This Sweatshirt Apart
Symmetry is the oldest principle of Nordic ornament, and the most difficult to maintain on a garment worn on the body.
- A sharp vertical axis: the motif is built around the torso's closure, which elongates the silhouette instead of widening it as circular compositions do.
- Exact mirror: no offset between the two halves—which implies a design conceived for the garment, not a cropped image.
- Animal heads at the extremities: the ribbons end in stylized muzzles, as in ancient Nordic art, without ever becoming a scene.
- The most understated of all-over prints: two values, one axis, no figures. It is the one you will wear most often.
If you want the same sobriety but without an all-over print, the solid-color model in fourteen shades goes even further.

Did you know?
Scandinavian interlace is almost never just ribbons: look closely, there is always an animal inside. A head, a claw gripping a neighboring ribbon, a tail that trails off. Art historians call this principle the gripping beast, characteristic of the 9th-century Borre style. The purely geometric motif, without any creature, is more of an invention of the 19th-century Celtic revival—often confused ever since with Viking ornament.

Which print style to choose?
| Print type | What it looks like | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Placed design | The body of the sweatshirt stays plain: the design is limited to the chest, the sleeves and the back. | When you want to wear the garment without the design ruling your day. It is also the only model available in fourteen color and ink combinations. |
| All-over print this product | The fabric is printed before assembly: front, back, sleeves, hood and right up to the seams. | When the garment is meant to be seen. Fifteen different designs, all in polyester, from 2XS to 4XL. |
| All-over print, finer artwork | The same full coverage, but a more detailed drawing and an acrylic, polyester and elastane knit. | When you look at a garment up close before buying it, or if polyester alone feels too stiff. Sizes up to 5XL, and up to 6XL for the zip-up model. |
Choosing your size
The manufacturer provides no size chart for the sweatshirts in this range. We would rather tell you so than publish a measurement chart we would have made up.
The method that never fails: take a sweatshirt you already wear and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Write this number down: it is your benchmark. You are comparing one garment with another, without going through a theoretical size, and theoretical sizes are precisely what vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the same size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.
A word about the letters. Beyond XXL, these labels follow no common standard: a 4XL, 5XL or 6XL has no fixed equivalent, and the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.
Is the design really symmetrical?
Yes, the axis runs down the middle of the torso: every knot on the left side has its exact mirror image on the right. It's the only model in this section designed that way.
Is there a hidden figure in the knotwork?
You can make out animal heads at the ends of the ribbons, as in historical Norse art, but no scene or character.
Is the white the background or the design?
The design. The background is black and the ribbons are drawn in white — the reverse of the white Yggdrasil model.
Does the hood carry the design?
Yes, and so does its lining, which shows when the hood is down.
