A Medallion That Only Reveals Itself Upon Approach
This Viking sweatshirt plays with three shades of gray set against a deep black: a large medallion of interlacing patterns in the center of the chest, friezes of runes that cover the body like a weave, and a dark border that closes the composition. At three meters away, you see a black sweatshirt; at one meter, everything appears. Find it in our Viking sweatshirt collection.
For a medallion rendered in bright light rather than dark monochromatic tones, see the Fenrir medallion.
What Sets This Sweatshirt Apart
Printing gray on black is the opposite of an easy choice: the contrast is low, and that is precisely what creates the effect.
- Three shades of gray: light medallion, medium friezes, near-black background. The pattern is revealed gradually instead of showing everything at once.
- Regular friezes: the bands of runes cover the body like a textile grid, which gives the garment a visual texture that a solid color would not have.
- A single focal point: the medallion is the only clear element—the eye knows where to rest, whereas saturated prints scatter the gaze.
- Subtle by design: this is the model in our range that best passes unnoticed from afar, despite being fully printed.
If, conversely, you are looking for a pattern that is immediately visible, the bright red skull model is the exact opposite.

Did you know?
The Younger Futhark, in use during the Viking Age, only has sixteen characters—compared to the twenty-four of the Older Futhark that preceded it. This is a counter-intuitive simplification: the Old Norse language had actually acquired new sounds during the same period. Therefore, a single rune had to denote several phonemes, so a word could be written in one way but read in several. Epigraphers see this as one of the reasons why some stone inscriptions remain unreadable even today.

Which print style to choose?
| Print type | What it looks like | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Placed design | The body of the sweatshirt stays plain: the design is limited to the chest, the sleeves and the back. | When you want to wear the garment without the design ruling your day. It is also the only model available in fourteen color and ink combinations. |
| All-over print this product | The fabric is printed before assembly: front, back, sleeves, hood and right up to the seams. | When the garment is meant to be seen. Fifteen different designs, all in polyester, from 2XS to 4XL. |
| All-over print, finer artwork | The same full coverage, but a more detailed drawing and an acrylic, polyester and elastane knit. | When you look at a garment up close before buying it, or if polyester alone feels too stiff. Sizes up to 5XL, and up to 6XL for the zip-up model. |
Choosing your size
The manufacturer provides no size chart for the sweatshirts in this range. We would rather tell you so than publish a measurement chart we would have made up.
The method that never fails: take a sweatshirt you already wear and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Write this number down: it is your benchmark. You are comparing one garment with another, without going through a theoretical size, and theoretical sizes are precisely what vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the same size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.
A word about the letters. Beyond XXL, these labels follow no common standard: a 4XL, 5XL or 6XL has no fixed equivalent, and the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.
What is in the central medallion?
A circular composition of animal knotwork surrounded by a runic border. It is a decorative design built on the vocabulary of Norse art, not a reproduction of a specific archaeological object.
Do the background runes spell out a text?
No. The friezes covering the body of the garment are futhark characters arranged in regular bands, like a weave. There is no message to decipher.
Is the gray uniform?
No, it ranges from light gray on the medallion to very dark gray on the background friezes, which gives the design three levels of reading depending on the viewing distance.
Is the black of the garment a true black?
Yes, the base is a deep black. The design is printed on top, which explains the matte finish.
