The Serpent That Bites Its Own Tail
This Jörmungandr Viking t-shirt wraps the Midgard serpent into a perfect ring: mouth open on its own tail, scaled body rendered with silver-colored lines, and in the center a red knot surrounded by a crown of runes in the same shade. Find this model in our viking t-shirts collection.
For a Nordic dragon rendered in a medallion rather than a ring, see the runic medallion dragon.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
A closed circular pattern imposes a constraint that open compositions do not: the connection must be seamless.
- Closed ring: the mouth meets the tail without any break in the line, which gives the design its ouroboros appearance at first glance.
- Two tones only: silver for the body, red for the runes and central knot: a reduced palette that keeps the shape legible.
- Outlined scales: each scale is drawn separately rather than suggested by a solid block of color, which avoids a grey smudge effect from a distance.
- Cotton: a fine-line design holds up better on a regular cotton knit than on synthetic material.
In the same vein of intricate circular design, the Gold Sleipnir features knotwork rather than scales.
Choosing Your Size
The manufacturer does not provide a size chart for this model. Rather than leaving you without a reference, here is an estimated range, calculated from the two adult charts documented for other models in the department. These are orders of magnitude, not guaranteed measurements — we prefer to be upfront about it.
| Size | Flat width | Chest size |
|---|---|---|
| S | 49 to 51 cm | 98 to 102 cm |
| M | 51 to 54 cm | 102 to 108 cm |
| L | 53 to 57 cm | 106 to 114 cm |
| XL | 55 to 60 cm | 110 to 120 cm |
| 2XL | 57 to 63 cm | 114 to 126 cm |
| 3XL | 59 to 66 cm | 118 to 132 cm |
| 4XL | 61 to 69 cm | 122 to 138 cm |
| 5XL | 63 to 72 cm | 126 to 144 cm |
| 6XL | 65 to 75 cm | 130 to 150 cm |
The range widens for larger sizes because the two known charts diverge starting at XL: one progresses by 4 cm per size, the other by 6.
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Enter this figure in the Flat width column: no calculations needed. You are thus comparing garment to garment, without relying on a theoretical size — and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The fit runs small, with narrower shoulders and a shorter body than a European cut of the equivalent size. Between two sizes, choose the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.
A word on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, standard French off-the-rack sizing practically does not use them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any common French size. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this department, a "L" ranges from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.

Did you know?
The episode of Thor fishing for the Midgard serpent is one of the very rare Nordic myths for which we possess both the text and the image, and they both match. The Hymiskviða tells that Thor goes to sea with the giant Hymir, baits his line with an ox head, hooks Jörmungandr, and pulls so hard that his feet go through the bottom of the boat. Indeed, the Altuna stone in Uppland, carved in the 11th century, shows exactly this: a figure with a hammer, a line stretched toward a serpentine creature, and a foot passing through the hull. Three other stones, including the Gosforth stone in Cumbria, depict the same scene. When text and stone corroborate each other to this extent, the historian has a rare foothold.

Who is Jörmungandr?
The Midgard Serpent, one of Loki's three children. He is so long that he encircles the world and bites his own tail at the bottom of the ocean. At Ragnarök, Thor kills him, then dies from his venom after nine steps.
Is this scene attested by archaeology?
The fishing episode is: the Altuna stone in Uppland, carved in the 11th century, shows Thor with his hammer, the line pulled taut and his foot going through the bottom of the boat, exactly as the Hymiskviða tells it.
Do the runes in the circle form a text?
No, it's a decorative frieze built from rune shapes. We won't attribute any hidden meaning to it.
Is the red bright?
It's a deep red, not a warning-sign red. It stands out clearly against the black without overpowering the silver of the serpent.
