The Eight-Legged Horse
This Viking Sleipnir t-shirt encloses Odin's horse within a circle of golden interlace: the body is rendered as knotted ribbons, a Valknut sits above the croup, and a raven rests on the neckline. The entire design is presented in a single shade of matte gold on black. Find this model in our viking t-shirt collection.
For another circular gold design, see the raven with gold interlace.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
A very dense monochrome pattern only works if the drawing clearly separates the planes through line thickness.
- Hierarchical lines: the horse's body is drawn with thicker lines than the background interlace, keeping the silhouette legible despite the density.
- Three symbols in one: Sleipnir, the Valknut, and the raven form a single figure instead of three juxtaposed motifs.
- Matte gold: a non-reflective golden ink, chosen because metallic inks crack when washed.
- Cotton: the only material on which gold holds up over time without fading to beige.
If you are interested in the Valknut as a main motif, the Valknut warrior t-shirt gives it full prominence.
Choosing Your Size
The manufacturer does not provide a size chart for this model. Rather than leaving you without a reference, here is an estimated range, calculated from two adult grids documented on other models in the department. These are order-of-magnitude estimates, not guaranteed measurements — we prefer to be upfront about this.
| Size | Flat Width | Chest Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| S | 49 to 51 cm | 98 to 102 cm |
| M | 51 to 54 cm | 102 to 108 cm |
| L | 53 to 57 cm | 106 to 114 cm |
| XL | 55 to 60 cm | 110 to 120 cm |
| 2XL | 57 to 63 cm | 114 to 126 cm |
| 3XL | 59 to 66 cm | 118 to 132 cm |
| 4XL | 61 to 69 cm | 122 to 138 cm |
| 5XL | 63 to 72 cm | 126 to 144 cm |
| 6XL | 65 to 75 cm | 130 to 150 cm |
The range widens for larger sizes because the two known grids diverge starting at XL: one progresses by 4 cm per size, the other by 6 cm.
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from armpit seam to armpit seam. Enter this number in the Flat Width column: no calculations needed. This way, you are comparing garment to garment, without relying on a theoretical size — and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of an equivalent size. If between two sizes, choose the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.
A word on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, French ready-to-wear clothing hardly uses them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any common French size. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this department, a "L" ranges from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.

Did you know?
Sleipnir was born from one of the most embarrassing stories in the Norse corpus, and Snorri tells it bluntly. A builder offers to fortify Asgard in one winter, provided he is given the sun, the moon, and Freyja; he works with a prodigious stallion, Svaðilfari, and gets ahead of schedule. The gods, trapped by their own oath, charge Loki with fixing the situation. Loki turns himself into a mare, lures the stallion away from the construction site — and returns some time later with a gray, eight-legged foal. As for these eight legs, several researchers see them as an image of four funeral stretcher-bearers: the horse that leads to the land of the dead would thus have as many legs as the stretcher carrying the deceased.

Why does Sleipnir have eight legs?
The text does not explain it. Several scholars see in them the image of the four bearers of a funeral bier: the horse that leads to the world of the dead would have as many legs as the bier's four bearers.
Who are Sleipnir's parents?
Loki, transformed into a mare, and the stallion Svaðilfari. Snorri tells the episode in the Gylfaginning: Loki had to stop a builder from finishing Asgard's walls in time.
Is the gold shiny?
No, it is a matte gold tone. Truly metallic inks age poorly in the wash and make the design look flashy.
Are there other symbols in the design?
Yes: a Valknut above the hindquarters and a raven perched on the neck, woven into the same network of knotwork.
