A Raven on an Illuminated Background
This Viking raven t-shirt highlights the bird with wings spread open in front of a highly ornate panel of golden interlacing, in the style of an illuminated manuscript page. The raven remains dark, the interlacing carries the light: the contrast is between the animal and its setting, not between the motif and the garment. Find this model in our Viking t-shirt collection.
For a circular rather than rectangular golden motif, see the Gold Sleipnir.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
Placing a dark figure on a light background, on a black garment, is a gamble: without a panel, the bird would disappear.
- Supporting panel: the rectangle of golden interlacing serves as a background and makes the raven visible even though it is almost the same color as the fabric.
- Cut-out wings: the feathers extend beyond the frame at the top and to the right, which breaks the rigidity of the panel.
- Matte gold: a warm hue without reflection, giving it the appearance of parchment rather than a metallic print.
- Cotton: the fine-line interlacing remains crisp on a regular knit.
For a raven that plays with light instead, the blue raven takes the opposite approach.
Choosing Your Size
The manufacturer does not provide a measurement chart for this model. Rather than leaving you without a reference, here is an estimated range, calculated from the two adult size grids documented for other items in this department. These are orders of magnitude, not guaranteed measurements — we prefer to be upfront about that.
| Size | Flat Width | Chest Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| S | 49 to 51 cm | 98 to 102 cm |
| M | 51 to 54 cm | 102 to 108 cm |
| L | 53 to 57 cm | 106 to 114 cm |
| XL | 55 to 60 cm | 110 to 120 cm |
| 2XL | 57 to 63 cm | 114 to 126 cm |
| 3XL | 59 to 66 cm | 118 to 132 cm |
| 4XL | 61 to 69 cm | 122 to 138 cm |
| 5XL | 63 to 72 cm | 126 to 144 cm |
| 6XL | 65 to 75 cm | 130 to 150 cm |
The range widens for larger sizes because the two known grids diverge starting from XL: one increases by 4 cm per size, the other by 6.
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt that you already own and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Apply this number to the Flat Width column: no calculations needed. You are thus comparing one garment to another, without relying on a theoretical size — and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the same size. Between two sizes, choose the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.
A word on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, standard Western ready-to-wear hardly uses them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any common Western size. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this department, an "L" can range from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Do not rely on the letter, rely on the centimeter.

Did you know?
The raven appeared on actual currency. Olaf Guthfrithson, Viking King of Dublin and then York, minted silver pennies around 939-941 featuring a bird with spread wings on the reverse and the inscription ANLAF CVNVNC — "Olaf King," with cununc, the Norse form of "king," written in Latin characters. These coins are rare: a few dozen are known, dispersed between the British Museum, the Yorkshire Museum, and a few private collections. Above all, they are the most direct evidence we possess of a Scandinavian power publicly adopting the raven as an emblem, on the most everyday object imaginable.

Did the raven appear on coins?
Yes. Olaf Guthfrithson, Viking king of Dublin and later of York, had silver pennies struck around 939-941 showing the bird with outspread wings and bearing the inscription ANLAF CVNVNC, “King Olaf.”
Is the design rectangular?
The knotwork panel is, but the raven's wings extend beyond it at the top and on the right, which avoids a stuck-on-label look.
Is the gold shiny?
No, it is a matte gold tone reminiscent of parchment. No metallic sheen.
How do I care for a gold print?
Wash inside out at 30 °C (86 °F), without fabric softener, and air-dry. Iron inside out only, never on the design.
