A Red Knot on Black
This black Viking bandana bears, on top of the head, a circular medallion of blood-red knotwork, dense and closed in on itself. No figure, no identifiable symbol: it is pure ornament, in the Norse vocabulary of the knot with no beginning and no end. It ties at the back with two flat straps. Find it in our Viking clothing collection.
For another circular motif, in gray this time, see the sun wheel bandana.
What Sets This Bandana Apart
Of nine designs, eight use gold, gray or brown. Only one dares to go red.
- The only red in the lineup: a deep blood red that stands out on the black without turning garish.
- No symbol to decode: the medallion is knotwork, not a sign. Nothing to explain.
- A dense pattern: the ribbons cross tightly enough for the motif to hold together as a single mass, visible from a distance.
- Flat straps: no bulk under a hood or a helmet.
If you prefer the same density in gold, see the gold Yggdrasil bandana.

Did You Know?
The most common red in Scandinavian textiles came from madder, a plant whose root was crushed. Analyses of the Birka fragments have found traces of it on many pieces, including ordinary clothing. But another, far more expensive red was also in circulation: kermes, extracted from insects gathered in the Mediterranean. Its presence on a Norse textile immediately signals an object brought from abroad or a piece of very high rank — color served as a social marker as much as an ornament.

Cap or bandana: which one to choose?
| Type | How it stays on | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Tie bandana this product | Two flat ties knot at the back of the head. The knot does the tightening: nothing to adjust, nothing to squeeze. | To keep your hair back, protect yourself from the sun or wear it under a helmet. Nine designs, no size to choose. |
| Classic cap | Structured crown, pre-curved visor, adjustable strap at the back. | The shape everyone knows. Three models, two of them in four and five colors: the widest palette in the range. |
| Washed denim cap | The same structure, but a cotton canvas washed after dyeing: thicker, more matte, with a soft visor. | When you prefer a material that looks worn in from day one. Three models, each piece with its own washed shades. |
How to wear it
There is no size to choose. The bandana sits on the head and ties at the back with two flat ties sewn into the fabric. The knot sets the tightness: you decide whether it sits tight or loose.
The right move: place the front edge of the fabric against your forehead, bring the two ties behind your head, cross them under the base of your skull, then tie. The back flap then falls naturally onto the nape of your neck.
Under a helmet or a hood: the ties are flat and the fabric stays thin, which avoids pressure points. This is a common use for this type of bandana.
Care: hand wash at 30 °C, air dry. The fabric is light and dries quickly; avoid the tumble dryer, which sets the creases of the knot.
What is the exact color of the medallion?
A deep blood red, not a bright red. It stands out against the black without becoming garish.
What's inside the medallion?
A dense circular knotwork, drawn from the Norse ornamental vocabulary. There's no identifiable figure or symbol in the center — it's a knot.
Is it the only red bandana in this section?
Yes. The eight others use gold, gray, brown or white.
Does the red hold up in the wash?
Yes, provided you hand wash it at 30 °C, without fabric softener, and let it air dry. Bright reds are the inks that stand up worst to the dryer.
