The Most Discreet Skull in the Range
These skull stud earrings fit on a flat disc just a few millimeters across: the skull is cut in intaglio, with the eye sockets and jaw deeply recessed rather than raised. The result: from a distance you see a dot of steel, and the motif only appears up close. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
For a skull in relief rather than recessed, our polished steel skull studs sculpt it in three dimensions.
What Sets This Pair Apart
On a motif this small, the depth of the engraving decides everything.
- Recessed engraving: the design is sunk into the metal, so it doesn't rub off like a surface print.
- Flat disc: no protruding edges, so the stud doesn't catch on anything and can be left in overnight comfortably.
- Push-back closure: straight post and push-back, the most secure fastening for such a tiny size.
- Stainless steel: the recesses of the engraving don't blacken over time.
For the blackened version in the same spirit, take a look at our small blackened skull studs.

Did You Know?
The skull is not part of the Viking decorative repertoire: you won't find it on rune stones, on brooches, or on the objects from Jelling or Urnes. The skull motif in jewelry comes from elsewhere, and from much later — from the Christian memento mori, the reminder of death that early modern Europe put everywhere. The first documented skull rings are the English mourning rings of the 17th century: they were handed out to family and friends at a funeral, often engraved on the inside with the name of the deceased and the date of death. The skull was not there to frighten, but to remember someone.

Can the design really be seen at this size?
Yes, at conversation distance. Beyond two or three meters, all you see is a steel disc. That is exactly the intended effect: a detail for those who look closely.
Can I wear them all the time?
Yes. The disc is flat with no sharp edges, stainless steel does not react to sweat, and the size is no bother during sports or on the pillow.
Is the skull a Viking symbol?
No. It does not appear on any Norse object from the period. It is a motif that comes from the European memento mori, later taken up by rock and biker fashion. We offer it for what it is.
Could the engraving fade?
No, it is cut into the metal itself, not printed. What can happen is that the recesses fill with skin oil and lose contrast: a soft toothbrush and soapy water will clear them out.
