A Tiny Skull, In Blackened Steel
These blackened skull stud earrings are the smallest in our gothic section: just a few millimeters, a head modeled in three dimensions, and a dark finish that deepens the eye sockets and teeth. On a lobe, one might first think they see a black dot — then the detail emerges. Find this product in our Viking earring collection.
For the same motif in polished steel and in a larger size, our polished steel skull studs play with light rather than shadow.
What Sets This Pair Apart
A miniature skull in shiny steel becomes illegible: it is the blackening that saves the motif.
- Blackened finish: the contrast between dark hollows and light reliefs makes the head recognizable despite the size.
- Modeled volume: cheekbones, brow ridges, and jaw are sculpted, not just suggested by a simple outline.
- Push-back clasp: straight post, back push-clasp, the stud stays in place.
- Stainless steel: the blackening is achieved on the metal itself; it does not flake off like varnish.
To stay within the blackened style with a completely different motif, our blackened wing studs use the same finish.

Did you know?
Intentionally blackening metal to make a motif stand out is nothing new: Viking goldsmiths mastered the art of niello. The process consists of engraving a design into silver, then pouring an alloy of sulfides — silver, copper, sometimes lead — of a deep black color into these grooves before repolishing the surface. The motif then appears in black against a light background, with a contrast that no engraving alone can provide. This work is found on scabbard fittings, stirrups, and prestigious Scandinavian jewelry. A thousand years later, the blackened steel of these studs pursues exactly the same intention: to make visible a relief that a polished finish would have erased.

What is the exact size?
About five millimeters tall, which makes it the smallest skull in our range. The motif can be made out at conversation distance, not beyond.
Can the blackening wear off?
No, it is created on the metal itself, not by an applied coating. The most exposed edges may lighten very slowly, which brings out the relief rather than damaging it.
Is this model OK to wear at work?
Yes, that is actually the point of this size: the skull is too small to be noticed from a distance. Those who come close see it; others do not.
Did the Vikings blacken metal?
Yes, using niello: they poured a black sulfide alloy into the engraved recesses of the silver, then polished it again. The motif stood out in black against a light background — exactly the principle used here.
