A Sculpted Skull With A Red Gaze
These skull stud earrings stand out for two reasons: the forehead is engraved with recessed arabesques, and the eye sockets feature two set red zircons. The result is a face that stares back at you, where most jewelry skulls settle for black holes. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.
For a skull without stone or ornamentation, our polished steel skull studs keep it simple.
What Sets This Pair Apart
The gaze is the most difficult part of a miniature skull: two poorly placed stones and the whole face becomes distorted.
- Set eye sockets: the zircons are embedded in the hollow of the socket, which gives depth to the gaze instead of placing it on the surface.
- Engraved forehead: the recessed arabesques are reminiscent of biker-style skulls and break up the roundness of the volume.
- Sculpted volume: the jaw and cheekbones are modeled, not just suggested by an outline.
- Stainless steel: the polish does not tarnish and the recessed areas do not blacken.
If you prefer the skull paired with a softer stone, see our skull and pink zircon studs.

Did you know?
The skull does not exist in Viking art, but the grimacing face does. The Aarhus runestone, erected in Denmark around the year 1000 and nicknamed "the mask stone," bears a large stylized face: wide round eyes, continuous eyebrows, and mustaches that extend into interlace patterns. This mask does not depict anyone in particular—researchers see it as an apotropaic figure, intended to ward off the evil eye from the tomb it marks. The same approach is found on Danish coins from the same period. The North did not represent death as a skeleton: it kept it at bay with a gaze.

Are the red eyes stones or paint?
They are two synthetic zircons set in the eye sockets. They reflect light like a cut stone, which colored lacquer never does.
How big is the skull?
About one centimeter tall. That is enough for the shape of the face to read clearly, while staying on the earlobe without extending past it.
Is this a rather masculine style?
Very much so: pronounced volume, crisp engraving, red stare. It is one of the most distinctly masculine pieces in the section, although nothing stops anyone from wearing it differently.
Does the skull appear in Viking art?
No. The grimacing mask does exist, however, notably on the Aarhus runestone, and it served to ward off evil. The skeleton as an image of death is a later Christian invention.
