A Skull Above An Angled Red Stone
These skull stud earrings feature a small engraved head superimposed over an oval red zircon, mounted slightly askew in its setting. This obliquity is not a flaw: it breaks the symmetry and brings movement to a piece that would appear static if perfectly aligned. Find this product in our Viking earring collection.
The same design with a pink stone can be found in our skull and pink zircon studs.
What Sets This Pair Apart
Combining a macabre motif with a large stone requires a decision: which one dominates?
- Dominant stone: Here, the zircon takes center stage, with the skull serving as a crown—the opposite of the usual choice.
- Oblique setting: The oval is tilted within the setting, which visually elongates the stud and avoids a medallion-like effect.
- Push-back clasp: A single post behind the stone, balanced so the skull remains upright.
- Stainless steel: No metal tarnishing or degradation of the setting.
For the red stone without a figurative motif, our raw setting studs focus entirely on the stone.

Did you know?
Here is one of the most persistent enigmas in Viking archaeology, and it concerns very real skulls. About thirty individuals exhumed in Sweden—mostly in Gotland—and Denmark exhibit perfectly regular horizontal grooves on their upper incisors, one to three per tooth, carved with a file with such care that it rules out an accident. Almost all were adult men. The operation, performed on living enamel, must have been long and unpleasant. No one knows why: a mark of status, a sign of recognition between merchants, a rite of passage, or a desire to impress. Hypotheses abound, but certainty is lacking. What is certain is that these men chose to have their teeth filed.

Is the stone really set at an angle?
Yes, on purpose. The oval is tilted in its setting to break the symmetry and add movement. Both earrings are tilted the same way.
Does the skull dominate the design?
No, the stone takes up the most surface; the skull sits on top of it like a crown. It is the opposite of most Gothic designs with a stone.
What is the total size?
Just under one and a half centimeters tall. It is one of the most visible studs in our range of stone earrings.
Did Vikings really file their teeth?
About thirty skulls found in Sweden and Denmark bear horizontal grooves filed into the incisors, almost all of them male. The reason remains unknown: status, group membership or intimidation, the hypotheses are still debated.
