A Big Red Stone in Deliberately Raw Metal
These red zircon stud earrings do the opposite of a polished piece of jewelry: the setting is irregular and hammered, like a chunk of rock closed around the stone. The contrast between the flawless facets of the zircon and the rugged look of the steel is the whole point of the piece. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.

What Sets This Pair Apart
It's the largest zircon in the range, and the setting is designed to carry it.
- Oversized stone: the zircon covers almost the entire surface of the stud, making it the most eye-catching pair in our gemstone range.
- Textured setting: the steel is worked into irregular ridges rather than polished — so each pair has a slightly different grain.
- Integrated prongs: the points holding the stone are part of the raw relief instead of being added onto it.
- Stainless steel: the rugged texture doesn't trap tarnish, unlike a standard silver-tone metal.
For the same intensity of red on a figurative motif, our skull and red zircon studs combine the two.

Did You Know?
Stainless steel, which this entire range is made of, owes its existence to a failure. In 1913, in Sheffield, Harry Brearley was looking for an alloy that could resist erosion in gun barrels. He varied the chromium content, cast his test samples, judged them disappointing and set them aside in a corner of the workshop. A few weeks later, he noticed that one of these rejects had not rusted while all the others had become pitted. Above about twelve percent, chromium forms an invisible, self-healing oxide film on the surface of the metal: scratch it and it immediately re-forms. That is exactly why a stainless steel earring can take the shower, the sea and sweat without flinching.

Are the two earrings identical?
The stones are, and the settings nearly so: since the raw look comes from an irregular texture, there are very slight differences in grain from one piece to the next. That is the whole principle of this finish.
How big is the stone?
About seven millimeters, which makes it the largest zircon in the range. The whole stud is close to one centimeter.
Is it too big for everyday wear?
No. It gets noticed, but it sits flat against the earlobe and has no moving parts. Many people wear it every day; it is a matter of taste rather than a practical constraint.
Why doesn't stainless steel rust?
Above roughly twelve percent chromium, an invisible oxide film forms on the surface and rebuilds itself as soon as it is scratched. This layer is what protects the metal, and it was discovered by accident in Sheffield in 1913.
