A Red Stone Held in a Serrated Crown

These red zircon stud earrings enclose the stone in an openwork steel crown whose upper edge is cut into regular teeth. Light passes through the side openings, which keeps the stone from darkening the way it would in a closed setting. Find this product in our Viking earrings collection.

For the same stone held in a solid setting, see our raw-setting studs.

What Sets This Pair Apart

An openwork setting is harder to get right than a solid one: it hides nothing.

  • Hollowed crown: the side openings let light in beneath the stone, brightening it instead of darkening it.
  • Serrated edge: the regular cutouts along the top give the setting rhythm and avoid a plain, impersonal ring.
  • Push-back clasp: straight post and push-on back, with no moving parts.
  • Stainless steel: the fine cutouts don't oxidize and don't close up over time.

For the same construction with a pink stone, our oval pink zircon studs use an equally intricate setting.

Did You Know?

The Vikings loved colored glass beads, and they had found a very economical way to get the raw material: they recycled the Roman Empire. The bead-making workshops excavated at Ribe, in Denmark, and at Åhus, in Sweden, have yielded mosaic tesserae — the small cubes of colored glass that once covered the walls and floors of Mediterranean buildings. Shipped in by the crateful, they were remelted on site and drawn out into beads. Red and deep blue, which were particularly hard to produce directly, thus arrived ready-made, as fragments of dismantled ancient decorations. A red bead worn in Ribe in the 8th century may, two centuries earlier, have been a piece of a Roman wall.
