On a tiger's eye bead, you are reading two states of the same rock. The dark, opaque bands are what remains of the original iron-rich stone; the light, silky bands are where silica did its work of replacement, fiber by fiber. The lapidary chooses the cutting angle accordingly: cut across the fibers, the effect disappears; cut parallel to them, it runs across the whole surface. Two beads from the same block can thus have nothing in common — it is the cutter's hand that decides, not the stone.

The color and the contrast. This one is darker and more streaked; the other is honey-colored and evenly golden. It is the same stone.
