A Horned Skull Beneath a Crown of Bones
The darkest piece in the series. A skull with long, curving horns fills the entire bowl, topped by a crown of small skulls that runs around the neck. The stem takes the shape of a spine, and the foot rests on more skulls. An unapologetically gothic chalice, in patinated stone gray. Find it in our collection of Viking chalices.
What Sets This Piece Apart
- Double wall: a sculpted resin outer shell and a removable food-grade stainless steel inner liner. Your drink only touches the metal.
- Three-dimensional horns: they stand out clearly from the bowl and give the piece its instantly recognizable silhouette.
- Vertebral stem: the sculpted spine makes a natural grip, each vertebra forming a notch for the fingers.
- Frieze of skulls at the neck: a complete crown encircling the upper edge, without getting in the way of the cup's lip.
- Real heft in the hand: 442 g empty. A far cry from a costume-party cup.

Did You Know?
This horned skull is an invention, and it's best to say so: no horned Viking helmet has ever been found. The only Viking Age helmet to have survived nearly complete, the one from Gjermundbu in Norway (10th century), is a simple four-panel iron skullcap without a single horn. The image comes from the theater: in 1876, costume designer Carl Emil Doepler gave the characters of Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung their horned helmets at Bayreuth. In less than a century, an opera costume designer's invention became the emblem of an entire people.

Dragon, skull or warrior: which design to choose?
| Design | What the cup shows | Who to give it to |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon | Body coiled around the stem, wings spread, set gem; from smooth low relief to full sculpture | The widest and most crowd-pleasing choice: fantasy fans, gamers, collectors |
| Skull and bones this product | Curled horns, membranous wings, stacked vertebrae, friezes of small skulls | For a dark decor you already embrace, and for autumn and Halloween tables |
| Warrior and helmet | Bearded face or nasal helm in high relief, crossed axes, knotwork at the foot | The most understated and most historical register: saga readers, fans of Viking series |
| Raven | Red-eyed bird perched on a skull, frieze of feathers and small bones | A targeted gift, for someone who recognizes Huginn and Muninn without being told their names |
| Goat and pentagram | Baphomet head inside a pentagram on a red background, frieze of skulls | An occult, non-Norse register, for those who embrace this imagery; 600 ml, a 500 ml bottle plus the head |
Did Viking helmets really have horns?
No. Not a single one has ever been excavated. The only near-complete Viking helmet, the Gjermundbu helmet, is smooth. The horns come from the costumes Carl Emil Doepler designed for Wagner in 1876. This chalice therefore belongs to Gothic imagination, not to archaeology.
Is the spine-shaped stem comfortable to hold?
Yes, it is actually one of its strengths: the sculpted vertebrae form a series of ridges that keep your hand from slipping, even with wet fingers.
What is its capacity?
About 200 ml. It is a chalice for tasting and display: for a larger volume, take a look at our barrel tankards holding 500 to 600 ml instead.
How do I care for it?
Remove the steel liner and wash it by hand in lukewarm water. For the outside, use a damp cloth and, if needed, a soft brush to remove dust from between the skulls of the crown. Never put it in the dishwasher.
