A Skull Caught in the Brambles
A skull emerges from a tangle of brambles and dead branches that covers the entire bowl, as if the cup had been abandoned long enough for the forest to reclaim it. The foot is ringed by a crown of small skulls. A skull chalice finished entirely in antique silver, with no bright color to draw the eye away from the relief. Find it in our collection of Viking chalices.
What Sets This Piece Apart
- Double wall: a sculpted resin outer shell and a removable food-grade stainless steel inner liner. Your drink only touches the metal.
- Sculpted tangle: the brambles cross over one another on several levels of depth, with real gaps between the branches. In terms of detail, it is the most intricate piece in the series.
- Unique patina: the dark wash settles into the hollows and pulls back from the ridges. No two pieces are ever exactly alike.
- Crown of skulls at the foot: a frieze of small skulls runs around the base and gives it a solid footing.
- Real heft in the hand: 442 g empty. A far cry from a costume-party cup.

Did You Know?
A word on the misconception this chalice brings to mind: no, the Vikings did not drink from the skulls of their enemies. The legend comes from a single mistranslated line. In 1636, the Danish scholar Ole Worm published a skaldic poem in which a warrior rejoices that he will soon drink ór bjúgviðum hausa, literally “from the curved trees of the skull”: a perfectly ordinary poetic circumlocution for drinking horns, which grow on the animal's skull. The passage was rendered in Latin as “in the skulls of the vanquished,” and three and a half centuries of misunderstanding followed.

Dragon, skull or warrior: which design to choose?
| Design | What the cup shows | Who to give it to |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon | Body coiled around the stem, wings spread, set gem; from smooth low relief to full sculpture | The widest and most crowd-pleasing choice: fantasy fans, gamers, collectors |
| Skull and bones this product | Curled horns, membranous wings, stacked vertebrae, friezes of small skulls | For a dark decor you already embrace, and for autumn and Halloween tables |
| Warrior and helmet | Bearded face or nasal helm in high relief, crossed axes, knotwork at the foot | The most understated and most historical register: saga readers, fans of Viking series |
| Raven | Red-eyed bird perched on a skull, frieze of feathers and small bones | A targeted gift, for someone who recognizes Huginn and Muninn without being told their names |
| Goat and pentagram | Baphomet head inside a pentagram on a red background, frieze of skulls | An occult, non-Norse register, for those who embrace this imagery; 600 ml, a 500 ml bottle plus the head |
Did the Vikings really drink from skulls?
No, never. This image comes from a 1636 mistranslation: a skaldic kenning for drinking horns, literally “the curved trees of the skull,” was rendered as “the skulls of the defeated.” This chalice is an object of gothic imagination, not a reconstruction.
Is the bramble relief comfortable to hold?
It's pronounced but rounded: no sharp edges. The recessed branches even provide a good grip, which makes the chalice less slippery than a smooth surface.
What is its capacity?
About 200 ml, roughly a generous glass of wine. For larger volumes, look at our barrel tankards, which hold 500 to 600 ml.
How do you clean such a detailed relief?
The steel liner lifts out and is washed by hand on its own: it's the part that holds the drink. For the outside, a damp cloth is enough, plus a soft-bristled brush if dust settles between the brambles.
