An Ox Horn, Not an Imitation

This Viking mug is carved from a real, hand-polished ox horn, fitted with a wooden base and featuring a closed handle. No resin, no plating: the veins, marbling, and nuances you see are those of the material itself. It comes in a jute bag screen-printed with a helmeted skull and crossed axes. Two colors to choose from: light horn or dark horn. Find it among our Viking drinking horns and mugs.

What Sets This Piece Apart

  • Each piece is unique: as horn is a natural material, the marbling and distribution of tones vary from one item to another. The one you receive will be unlike any other.
  • Two natural shades: the light horn leans towards cream with black veining, while the dark horn is dominated by deep black. These are not dyes, but two selections of material.
  • Closed handle: unlike a traditional drinking horn, this mug stands on its own and can be held in one hand.
  • Jute bag included: practical for transport to medieval festivals, and it serves as a gift bag as is.

Did you know?

Horn has an advantage that neither wood nor metal possesses: it is thermoplastic. When heated, it softens and can be shaped; when cooled, it retains that shape permanently. This is what allowed medieval craftsmen to split it, flatten it into translucent sheets, and make lantern panes before the common use of glass—the English word lanthorn keeps a trace of this. The same property explains why you should never pour boiling liquid into it: the heat would cause the material to warp.
