Brick Red and Golden Wings

This Viking tank top does not seek discretion: a brick-red background fading to black, a helmeted warrior with a fiery gaze occupying the entire chest, a braided beard, and two golden wings spread from the collar to the armholes. The back features the same golden interlacing around a wolf's head. Find it in our Viking tank top collection.

For a face rendered in gold on black, without red, see the Golden One-Eyed Odin.

The Horned Helmet: What You Need to Know

The warrior in this design wears a horned helmet. No horned Viking helmet has ever been found — not a single one, across all Scandinavian excavations. The only known complete Viking Age helmet, the one from Gjermundbu in Norway, is a simple iron bowl made of four segments with an eye mask, without the slightest horn. The image comes from the 19th century: costumes from Wagner's operas and Romantic illustrations imposed it within a few decades. This garment plays with this visual code rather than archaeology, and we prefer to let you know.

What Sets This Tank Top Apart

  • The only red one in the range: fifteen models out of sixteen are black, white, or gray.
  • Wings that follow the shoulder: the golden pattern follows the line of the trapezius instead of remaining stuck in the center.
  • Two inks on a colored background: gold and black on red, a printing exercise that few garments of this type attempt.
  • A gradient toward the hem: the red darkens as it descends, which gives depth to the background.

Did you know?

Horned helmets do exist in Scandinavia — but a thousand years too early. The two Viksø helmets, discovered in Denmark in 1942 and redated in 2019 by analysis of the birch pitch they contained, date back to around 900 BCE. They belong to the Nordic Bronze Age, and their bronze horns designate them as ritual objects, not combat gear. Eighteen centuries passed between them and the first longship.

Which tank top to choose?

TypeWhat it looks likeWhen to choose it
All-over print, black and whiteThe design covers the whole garment, front and back, in two bold tones without color. The core of the range: nine designs, from S to 6XL, the widest size range of the three families.
All-over print, gold or color this productThe same full coverage, but with gold, brick red or slate blue. When the garment is meant to be seen. Four models, the most striking in the series, and the only ones that go beyond black and white.
Stretch knit or muscle cutTwo models whose knit contains elastane and moves with you, plus one muscle-cut model that covers the shoulder. When the garment is really for training, or if thin straps don't suit you. Note: the muscle cut stops at 2XL.

Choosing your size

The manufacturer provides no size chart for the tank tops in this range. We would rather tell you so than publish a measurement chart we would have made up.

The method that never fails: take a tank top or a T-shirt you already wear and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Write this number down: it is your benchmark. You are comparing one garment with another, without going through a theoretical size, and theoretical sizes are precisely what vary from one manufacturer to another.

The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of the same size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: this is the advice that avoids the most returns.

Available sizes vary by model. Thirteen tank tops go from S to 6XL, two from S to 5XL, and the muscle-cut one stops at 2XL. Check the drop-down list on the product page before ordering: it is the one that counts.

A word about the letters. Beyond XXL, these labels follow no common standard: a 4XL, 5XL or 6XL has no fixed equivalent, and the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.
