A long-handled bearded axe — and a title we’ve corrected
A bearded blade, with a cutting edge that extends downward into a point beneath the socket, mounted on a light-colored, sixty-three-centimeter handle entirely wrapped in dark straps. The heel is wrapped in leather up to the pommel.

What sets this piece apart
- The blade is bearded: the cutting edge extends into an elongated point below the socket — the most well-attested silhouette in the North, that of the tool one carried because one already owned it.
- A long handle for a one-handed axe: sixty-three centimeters provides reach without requiring two hands. It is an intermediate format, rare in replicas.
- Full wrapping: crossed straps run the entire length of the shaft, down to the leather-wrapped heel. The grip is textured along its entire length.
- This is not a weapon: the PU foam with a rigid core does not cut, pierce, or strike. This replica is made for costumes, reenactment, and display.

Did you know?
This listing was called "Viking Sword" until today. It never was one: the photo shows an axe head, and we prefer to correct rather than let it slide. Substantively, the error is instructive — the bearded axe, or skeggøx, is precisely the weapon that the sword never was in the North: accessible, present in a majority of armed graves, and already in every farm as a tool. Where a meter-long blade required weeks of forging and a fortune in metal, an axe head could be ordered from the village blacksmith.
To learn more, our anatomy of the Viking sword details how these weapons were forged, and our guide on Viking warrior equipment places each piece in its proper context.

Does this axe cut?
No. PU foam with a rigid core and no cutting edge: it is a costume and decorative replica.
Is this a sword or an axe?
An axe. The item is a bearded axe, as the photo shows.
What is a bearded axe?
An axe head whose cutting edge extends down to a point below the socket. This “beard” lengthens the cutting edge without adding weight and lets you hold the handle just below the head.
Is it held with one hand or two?
With one hand. Its 63 cm give it reach, but the handle is too short for a comfortable two-handed grip.
