Let’s be honest: this coat has no medieval ancestors. The open, long-hooded coat is a contemporary silhouette, born from Japanese streetwear and the darkwear movement of the 2010s. What it borrows from ancient coats is its effect — masking the body’s silhouette, lengthening the frame, and keeping the face in shadow. This is exactly what the Scandinavian coat, pinned at the shoulder, did for entirely different reasons: it needed to leave the sword arm free.
