Gebo, the gift — and the debt it creates
An oblique cross, two lines intersecting at their midpoint, engraved in a cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of bronze-patinated alloy. Gebo names the gift — but in a society where receiving was never free.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The most symmetrical symbol of the Elder Futhark: it reads the same in all four directions, making it the only rune in the series that cannot be put on upside down.
- A sign of exchange more than generosity: what is given calls for a return, and it is the bond created that matters.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock of hair before braiding. The fullness of the braid keeps it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approximately 6 mm hole: the only criterion that truly matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Hávamál, the collection of maxims attributed to Odin, leaves no doubt about what a gift entails: "a gift always expects a gift," and the man who receives without returning remains a debtor. In a stateless society where alliance served as a contract, the exchange of gifts forged loyalties: a ring given by a chieftain was a pledge. Gebo is therefore not the rune of charity, it is that of reciprocity — the invisible thread that binds two people together.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with supporting sources, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Gebo rune mean?
It names the gift. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem describes it as an honor and a support for the giver as well as for the receiver.
Why does Gebo look like an X?
Its shape is a diagonal cross. It is the only perfectly symmetrical rune of the Elder Futhark: it reads the same in every direction, right side up or upside down.
Did gift-giving have special value among the Vikings?
Yes. The Hávamál reminds us that a gift calls for a gift: the exchange sealed alliances and created a mutual obligation, far more than a gesture of generosity.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
The hole measures about 6 mm, which suits a medium-thick beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
