Wunjo, joy — that of one who lacks nothing and fears no one
A stem topped with a triangular loop, like a P, engraved in an oval cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of patinated bronze. Wunjo closes the first ætt of the Elder Futhark with the only positive sentiment in the entire series.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The eighth and final rune of the first group of eight: it closes Freyr's ætt on a note that the other seven do not provide.
- A very concrete joy, defined by what it excludes: neither pain, nor sorrow, nor worry.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock of hair before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approximately 6 mm hole: the only criterion that really matters. It must be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem provides the most complete definition we have of a rune of happiness, and it is surprisingly down-to-earth: joy belongs to one who knows neither pain nor sorrow, and possesses for himself prosperity, happiness, and a sufficiently secure home. It is not a state of mind; it is a situation. Wunjo, moreover, only survives through this single poem: the Younger Futhark, being shorter, removed the sign, and the Norwegian and Icelandic traditions therefore never gloss it.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources to support it, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Wunjo rune mean?
Joy. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem defines it as the absence of pain and sorrow, together with prosperity and a secure home — a concrete joy, not a feeling.
Why does Wunjo appear in only one tradition?
The Younger Futhark, used during the Viking Age, went from twenty-four to sixteen signs and dropped Wunjo. Only the Anglo-Saxon poem keeps it and comments on it.
What position does it hold in the Futhark?
The eighth: it closes the first ætt, the group of eight runes associated with Freyr, before Hagalaz opens the next one.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
A hole of about 6 mm, suited to a medium-density beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
