Laguz, water — the rune of a people who lived upon it
A vertical stroke topped with a short diagonal, engraved in a cartouche on this beard and hair bead. Laguz names water: the lake, the sea, the current. For a people whose roads were fjords and whose towns were reached by oar, it is anything but a decorative element.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The rune of that which carries and that which carries away: the same water that opens the path can close it.
- A minimal design, two lines, which remains perfectly legible even at the size of a bead.
- A slip-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that secures it, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6 mm hole: the only criterion that truly matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Anglo-Saxon rune poem is not at all lyrical: water "seems endless to men if they must venture on an unstable ship, the waves of the sea frighten them greatly, and the steed of the waves does not obey the bridle." It is the testimony of a sailor, not a poet—and it reminds us that the Scandinavian sea was first a danger before it was a conquest.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with supporting sources, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Laguz rune mean?
Laguz stands for water — the sea, the lake, the current. For the Scandinavian peoples, it was both the main travel route and the main danger.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
The Elder Futhark form predates the Viking Age. Scandinavians of the 9th-11th centuries wrote with the Younger Futhark, which has sixteen signs.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
The hole measures about 6 mm, suited to a medium-density beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
Is the bead sensitive to water?
No, but the patinated alloy tarnishes with prolonged moisture. Take it off before showering and dry it with a cloth if it gets caught in the rain.
