Mannaz, the human — the rune for what we cannot be alone
Two stems joined by a central intersection, like an M, engraved in an oval cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of bronze-patinated alloy. Mannaz names the human being — and the very shape of the sign says that it takes two.

What sets this beard bead apart
- Two uprights that meet in the center: the only rune of the Elder Futhark whose shape suggests a pair rather than an individual.
- The word has remained alive: Old Norse maðr, German Mann, and English man all stem from it.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead is slid onto the strand before braiding. The thickness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6mm hole: the only criterion that really matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Hávamál summarizes in three words what this sign encompasses: maðr er manns gaman, "man is the joy of man." Elsewhere, the same collection provides the reverse with a famous image — the pine tree that grows alone on a hillside, without bark or needles to shelter it, and which withers away. The Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem chooses a darker angle: man is dear to his fellow, but each is fated to betray the other, for the lord will consign every body to the earth.
To go further, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources provided, and our Elder Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Mannaz rune mean?
Man, the human being. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem says that he is dear to his kin, while reminding us that everyone is mortal.
Why does the rune look like an M?
Its shape is made of two uprights joined by a central crossing. It is the only rune in the Elder Futhark whose shape suggests a pair rather than a single person.
Has this word left any traces?
Yes, directly: Old Norse maðr, German Mann and English man all descend from the same Germanic root.
What strand thickness does this bead fit?
The hole measures about 6 mm, which fits a medium-density beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
