Antique Silver Vegvísir — same sign, different tone
The eight-armed circle engraved in a cartouche, on an antique silver-finished alloy beard and hair bead. This is the cool-toned version of our most requested model: bronze warms, silver cuts.

What sets this beard bead apart
- Eight branches, each with a different ending — this is what distinguishes the Vegvísir from the Ægishjálmur, whose eight arms are identical.
- Antique silver suits light hair and grey beards, whereas patinated bronze works better with brown and red hair.
- A slide, not a clasp: the bead is slipped onto the strand before braiding. It is the thickness of the braid that holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Hole size approximately 6 mm: the only criterion that really matters. It should be a little narrower than the finished braid and a little wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Vegvísir is not Viking. It only appears in a single document: the Huld Manuscript, a collection of Icelandic sigils compiled by Geir Vigfússon in Akureyri in 1860 — eight centuries after the end of the Viking Age. The accompanying formula promises that "the wearer of this sign will never lose his way, even in a storm, even if he does not know his destination." It is a real and documented Icelandic magical tradition. It is simply not an ancient Scandinavian tradition, and no Viking sailor ever carved it onto a ship's prow.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources provided, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

Is the Vegvísir a Viking symbol?
No. It only appears in the Huld manuscript, compiled in Iceland in 1860, eight centuries after the Viking Age. It is a late Icelandic sigil, not an ancient Scandinavian symbol.
What is the difference between the silver and bronze versions?
The motif is identical; only the finish changes. Antique silver is cooler and stands out against light hair; patinated bronze adds warmth and suits warm hair colors better.
How can I tell it apart from the Ægishjálmur?
The arms of the Vegvísir all end differently. Those of the Ægishjálmur are identical and radiate from a single center.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
The hole is about 6 mm: a medium-density beard braid, or a thin braid of hair.
