Uruz, the aurochs — a beast that no one will ever see again
The second sign of the Elder Futhark, traced as two vertical strokes that fall upon this beard and hair bead made of patinated bronze. Uruz names the aurochs, the wild ox of Europe: an animal standing nearly two meters at the shoulder, reputed to be indomitable, which sources describe as the very measure of raw strength.

What distinguishes this beard bead
- The rune of indisputable vigor — the one chosen for endurance rather than fortune.
- Its design is one of the most stable in the Futhark: two vertical strokes and a diagonal bar, with no notable regional variations.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead is slipped onto the strand before braiding. The thickness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Bore of approximately 6 mm: the only criterion that really matters. It must be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose strand.

Did you know?
The aurochs is not a creature of legend: it is a real species, and it disappeared before our very eyes. The last known individual died in 1627 in the Jaktorów Forest, Poland. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem describes it as "fierce and greatly horned" — an animal that its contemporaries knew well enough to fear, and that we now only know through its bones.
To learn more, our guide to Viking hairstyles details cuts, braids, and beards, with supporting sources, and our guide to the Futhark alphabet covers each sign one by one.

What does the Uruz rune mean?
Uruz means the aurochs, the European wild ox, and by extension raw strength and endurance. It's the second rune of the Elder Futhark.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
Not in this form. Uruz belongs to the Elder Futhark, which predates the Viking Age. The Younger Futhark, the one on Scandinavian runestones, has only 16 signs.
What braid thickness does this bead fit?
The hole is about 6 mm, which fits a medium beard braid or a thin braid of hair. The bead is held in place by the fullness of the braid, not by a mechanism.
Is the alloy suitable for sensitive skin?
It's a patinated alloy, not surgical steel. Contact with the skin is minimal since the bead sits on the braid, but if you react to costume-jewelry alloys, choose our steel models instead.
