Hagalaz, hail — the trial that falls and melts
Two uprights connected by a crossbar, engraved in a cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of bronze-patinated alloy. Hagalaz names hail: the scourge that strikes the harvest, brutal and uncontrollable—yet turns into water.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The rune of disruption endured, not chosen—and of what comes after.
- It opens the second group of eight in the Elder Futhark, the ættir associated with forces we cannot control.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. The fullness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6 mm hole: the only criterion that truly matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The Anglo-Saxon rune poem gives an image of surprising precision: hail is "the whitest of grains; it whirls from the vault of the sky, the gusts of wind toss it, then it becomes water." This is not a metaphor for destiny: it is the observation of a peasant who watched the sky, described hail as a white seed, and noted that it eventually nourishes the earth.
To go further, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources provided, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Hagalaz rune mean?
Hagalaz means hail, and by extension a hardship that strikes without being chosen. The rune poem stresses that it turns to water: the upheaval is violent but short-lived.
Is it a rune of ill omen?
The rune poems do not present it as a curse but as a harsh natural phenomenon. It is the rune of going through hardship, not of lasting misfortune.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
Not in this form: it belongs to the Elder Futhark, in use before the Viking Age. The Younger Futhark of the Scandinavian runestones writes this sound with a different shape.
What strand thickness does this bead fit?
A hole of about 6 mm, which suits a medium beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
