Jera, the good year — the reward that comes in due time
Two chevrons that interlock without touching, engraved in a cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of patinated bronze. Jera names the year, but above all the good year: the season that has kept its promises and the harvest that follows.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The only rune in the Futhark whose shape reads just like its meaning: two halves that rotate around each other, like the seasons.
- It does not promise luck: it promises the result of work already done. The nuance is explicit in the runic poems.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead is slid onto the lock before braiding. It is the fullness of the braid that secures it, so there is nothing that can break.
- Hole diameter of approx. 6 mm: the only criterion that truly matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock of hair.

Did you know?
The word has traveled all the way into our calendars. Jera is the same word as the English year and the German Jahr — and the Old Norse ár meant both "year" and "abundance." Wishing a Scandinavian from the 10th century a good year literally meant wishing them a good harvest: the two concepts were indistinguishable.
To go further, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources provided, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Jera rune mean?
Jera stands for the year and the harvest — the completed season that bears its fruit. In Old Norse, the word meant both “year” and “abundance”.
Is it a luck rune?
Not in the sense of chance. The rune poems link it to work already done that finally pays off: it is the reward of a cycle, not a stroke of luck.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
This shape belongs to the Elder Futhark, which predates the Viking Age. The Younger Futhark, the one on Scandinavian runestones, writes this sound with a different sign.
What strand thickness does this bead fit?
The hole is about 6 mm: a medium-density beard braid, or a thin braid of hair.
