Ehwaz, the horse — the rune of duality
An M-shaped design engraved in an oval cartouche on a beard and hair bead made of a bronze-patinated alloy. Ehwaz names the horse: not just the beast alone, but the pair it forms with the one who rides it.

What distinguishes this beard bead
- The rune of partnership and mutual trust — this is the meaning given by the poems, not a modern interpretation.
- Not to be confused with Mannaz, the man, whose design resembles it: Ehwaz has parallel vertical lines, while Mannaz crosses them.
- A slide-on, not a clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. The fullness of the braid holds it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Inner hole of approximately 6 mm: the only criterion that really matters. It must be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose lock.

Did you know?
The Anglo-Saxon rune poem describes the horse as "the joy of princes [...] a comfort for the restless." The word itself is a direct cousin of the Latin equus: both descend from the same Indo-European root. And the most famous horse of the North, Sleipnir, had eight legs — a mount of Odin that the sagas never describe as running, but rather as gliding.
To learn more, our Viking hairstyle guide details cuts, braids, and beards, with sources provided, and our Futhark alphabet guide covers each sign one by one.

What does the Ehwaz rune mean?
Ehwaz stands for the horse, and by extension the bond of trust between two beings moving forward together. It is the rune of partnership.
How is it different from the Mannaz rune?
The two shapes look alike. Ehwaz has two parallel uprights joined by a point; Mannaz, the man, has strokes that cross. Always check the drawing before choosing.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
Not in this form: it belongs to the Elder Futhark, used from the 2nd to the 8th century, before the Viking Age proper.
What strand thickness does this bead fit?
A hole of about 6 mm, which fits a medium beard braid or a thin braid of hair.
