Nauthiz, need — the constraint that teaches
A vertical post crossed by a diagonal, the most minimalist design in the Elder Futhark, on a beard and hair bead made of patinated bronze. Nauthiz signifies necessity, need, constraint: what is lacking, and what that lack forces one to do.

What sets this beard bead apart
- The most austere rune in the set, and the easiest to recognize: two strokes, nothing else.
- Its meaning is not just deprivation, but the lesson it imposes — the runic poem emphasizes this point.
- Slide-on, no clasp: the bead slides onto the lock before braiding. The fullness of the braid keeps it in place, so there is nothing that can break.
- Approx. 6mm bore: the only criterion that truly matters. It should be slightly narrower than the finished braid, and slightly wider than the loose hair.

Did you know?
The Anglo-Saxon Runic Poem refuses to dwell only on misfortune: "Need binds the breast, yet often it becomes, for the sons of men, a help and a salvation, provided they heed it in time." The nuance is remarkable for an Early Middle Ages text — constraint is described there as a signal, not as a fate.

What does the Nauthiz rune mean?
Nauthiz means need and necessity — the constraint that tightens its grip, but teaches. The Anglo-Saxon rune poem describes it as a help to whoever heeds it early enough.
Was this rune used in the Viking Age?
The Elder Futhark to which it belongs predates the Viking Age. The Vikings carved the Younger Futhark, which has sixteen signs.
What strand thickness does this bead fit?
The hole is about 6 mm: a beard braid of medium thickness, or a thin braid of hair.
Should I take it out to wash?
It is better to. The problem is not the water but the shampoo, which leaves a film inside the hole and makes the strand slippery.
