An Axe Joke
This humorous Viking t-shirt frames a helmeted warrior, axe and shield in hand, between two lines of English text: Some people just need a sympathetic pat on the head — with an axe. It is the only truly funny piece in this section. Find this model in our Viking t-shirt collection.
If humor is not what you are looking for, the Til Valhalla with crossed axes features the weapon with a more serious tone.
What Sets This T-Shirt Apart
A graphic t-shirt is judged by its readability: if the sentence isn't easy to read at a glance, the joke falls flat.
- Hierarchical typography: three different text sizes, with the punchline printed in large — making it easy to read in the correct order without effort.
- Centered warrior: the illustration separates the setup from the punchline, preserving the effect instead of revealing it all at once.
- Side interlace: two columns of Norse knots frame the figure and tie the joke back to its theme.
- Cotton: a t-shirt worn to be seen is washed often: cotton holds up better to repeated machine cycles.
In a similar vein of boldness, the full-print helmeted warrior turns the intensity up even further.
Choosing Your Size
The manufacturer does not provide a measurement chart for this model. Rather than leaving you without a reference, here is an estimated range, calculated from two adult charts documented for other models in this section. These are orders of magnitude, not guaranteed measurements — we prefer to be upfront about that.
| Size | Flat Width | Chest Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| S | 49 to 51 cm | 98 to 102 cm |
| M | 51 to 54 cm | 102 to 108 cm |
| L | 53 to 57 cm | 106 to 114 cm |
| XL | 55 to 60 cm | 110 to 120 cm |
| 2XL | 57 to 63 cm | 114 to 126 cm |
| 3XL | 59 to 66 cm | 118 to 132 cm |
| 4XL | 61 to 69 cm | 122 to 138 cm |
| 5XL | 63 to 72 cm | 126 to 144 cm |
| 6XL | 65 to 75 cm | 130 to 150 cm |
The range widens for larger sizes because the two known charts diverge from XL onwards: one increases by 4 cm per size, the other by 6.
The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Apply this number to the Flat Width column: no calculations needed. By doing this, you are comparing a garment to a garment without relying on a theoretical size — and theoretical sizes are exactly what vary from one manufacturer to another.
The cut runs small: narrower at the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of an equivalent size. When between two sizes, choose the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.
A word on the letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, standard European ready-to-wear clothing rarely uses them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL does not correspond to any standard size. Worse, the same letter doesn't mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this section, an "L" can range from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Don't trust the letter; trust the centimeter.

Did you know?
If the axe became the quintessential Viking weapon, it wasn't for the spectacle: it was a matter of price. A sword from the Viking Age required several kilos of high-quality iron and weeks of forging work — cleaning, welding, tempering — which made it a high-value asset, often passed down and sometimes named. An axe head, however, only required a few hundred grams of iron with an added steel edge, and the handle was made of wood. Most fighters therefore carried an axe and a spear, not a sword. This did not rule out luxury: the Mammen axe, found in Denmark in a grave dated to the 970s by dendrochronology, is inlaid with silver wire on both sides.

Is the text in English or in French?
In English. The phrase plays on the double meaning of a “friendly pat on the head,” and a French translation would kill the pun. We left it as it is.
Is it a good gift?
Yes. It's the model in this section that works best as a gift, precisely because it doesn't commit you to anything: you can wear it tongue-in-cheek without making any kind of statement.
Is the warrior wearing a horned helmet?
No, the helmet in the illustration is smooth. That's historically more accurate: no horned helmet from the Viking Age has ever been found in an excavation.
Is the print large?
Yes, it's the largest screen print in this section: the block of text plus illustration covers almost the entire chest.
