An Eye That Follows You

At the center of the body, an iridescent dragon eye occupies the entire space: a domed cabochon with green and gold reflections, surrounded by two membranous wings and an open jaw. Around it, dark green interlace patterns run along the entire circumference and continue onto the handle. 450 ml capacity for 550 g empty weight. Find it among our Viking mugs.

What Sets This Piece Apart

  • Double wall: an outer sculpted resin shell and a removable food-grade stainless steel inner liner. Your drink only touches the metal.
  • Iridescent cabochon: the eye changes hue depending on the angle, from green to gold. It is the only shiny element on an entirely matte piece.
  • Interlace on the handle: the pattern does not stop at the body; it goes all the way around to the grip.
  • Two-tone patina: dark green in the recesses, aged silver on the edges.
  • Hand-applied patina: the recesses remain dark, the edges catch the light. No two copies are ever strictly identical.

Did you know?

The interlace on this mug is Celtic in style rather than Nordic, and the distinction is worth making. Irish and Scottish insular art weaves geometric ribbons with no beginning or end, as seen in the Book of Kells. Scandinavian art, on the other hand, is almost always zoomorphic: what interlaces are beasts, with a head, a paw, or a jaw biting the neighboring ribbon. Both traditions intersected in the Viking colonies of Ireland and Northumbria, and one can find stone crosses where both styles coexist on the same face.
