A Rearing Bear, in Armor and Armed

This viking bear t-shirt does not show an animal: it shows a warrior. The bear stands on its hind legs, wearing a shoulder pad over its withers, chainmail, and greaves engraved with interlacing patterns, holding a round shield in one paw and a double-edged axe in the other. The design is rendered in tones of bone and brown on black, in distressed flat tints, without gradients. Find this model in our viking t-shirts collection.

If you are looking for the bear as an emblem rather than full-body, our berserker bear in a blue medallion features the same animal as a head-on portrait, within a circle of runes.

What Sets This T-Shirt Apart

Most bear designs in this category stop at the head. This one follows the idea to the end and arms the animal.

  • A full-body figure: the bear occupies the entire height of the chest, from claws to muzzle, whereas a medallion is confined to a circle.
  • Coherent equipment: the round shield with crossed bands and central boss, and the double-edged axe engraved with interlacing, belong to the same period as the armor—nothing is decorative by chance.
  • Only two tones: bone and brown on black. No accent colors, no gradients: the design is readable from a distance and ages well in the wash.
  • Cotton: the distressed flat tints and fine hatching look better on a regular knit than on technical fabric.

For the axe alone, without the animal, see the warrior with an axe.

Choosing Your Size

The manufacturer does not provide a measurement chart for this model. Rather than leaving you without a reference, here is an estimated range, calculated from the two adult size charts documented on other models in the category. These are orders of magnitude, not guaranteed measurements—we prefer to state this clearly.

Size Flat Width Chest Circumference
S 49 to 51 cm 98 to 102 cm
M 51 to 54 cm 102 to 108 cm
L 53 to 57 cm 106 to 114 cm
XL 55 to 60 cm 110 to 120 cm
2XL 57 to 63 cm 114 to 126 cm
3XL 59 to 66 cm 118 to 132 cm
4XL 61 to 69 cm 122 to 138 cm
5XL 63 to 72 cm 126 to 144 cm
6XL 65 to 75 cm 130 to 150 cm

The range widens for larger sizes because the two known charts diverge starting from XL: one increases by 4 cm per size, the other by 6.

The foolproof method: take a t-shirt you already own and that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure from one armpit seam to the other. Compare this number to the Flat Width column: no calculations needed. You are comparing one garment to another, without relying on a theoretical size—and it is precisely these theoretical sizes that vary from one manufacturer to another.

The cut runs small: narrower in the shoulders and shorter in the body than a European cut of equivalent size. Between two sizes, choose the larger one: this is the advice that prevents the most returns.

A note on letters. These sizes follow a specific nomenclature, and beyond XXL, French ready-to-wear barely uses them: a 4XL, 5XL, or 6XL do not refer to any standard French size. Worse, the same letter does not mean the same thing from one manufacturer to another: in this category, an "L" ranges from 94 to 112 cm in chest circumference depending on the model. Do not trust the letter, trust the centimeter.

Did you know?

The shield held by this bear is not an innocent accessory. In the Saga of the Ynglings, Snorri Sturluson describes Odin's warriors who went into battle "without chainmail, raging like dogs or wolves, biting their shields." For a long time, this was taken as a figure of speech—until the Lewis chessmen confirmed it visually. Discovered in 1831 on an island in the Outer Hebrides, this collection of walrus ivory pieces, carved around 1150-1200, likely in Trondheim, includes rooks depicted as standing foot soldiers, shields raised—and several of them are literally biting the upper edge of their shield. A 12th-century Norse sculptor thus represented the gesture described by the saga, three centuries after the Viking Age.
