The prong setting you see here has a precise birth date, and a recent one. Until the 19^th century, gems were enclosed in a closed bezel setting: a rim of metal folded down all the way around, which protected them but blocked light from below. In 1886, Tiffany introduced a six-prong mount that lifted the stone above the band and let it bathe in light from every side. The idea seems obvious today; it transformed jewelry within a generation. Our studs use the same principle with four prongs instead of six, which gives a more discreet grip for a stone of this size.
