Viking Earrings — en savoir plus
Discreet studs, closed hoops, dangles that move with every step: this category brings together earrings with Nordic motifs, all made of stainless steel. They are worn in pairs or individually, and most models are suitable for both men and women.
Three shapes, three uses
The choice is based less on the motif than on the shape: it determines the subtlety of the piece and its daily comfort.
| Shape | What it is | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| Stud (post) | The motif is flush against the lobe, held by a post and a back clutch | The most discreet. Can be worn day and night, won't snag on clothing or hair |
| Hoop (ring) | A ring that passes through the lobe and closes on itself | Visible from the front and the side. The motif runs along the hoop: coiled snake, dragon, interlace |
| Dangle | The motif hangs below the lobe and swings freely | The most expressive. Best for motifs that deserve to be seen in their entirety: sword, anchor, hammer |
Motifs and what they tell us
The raven refers to Huginn and Muninn, Odin's two birds: one is Thought, the other is Memory. They travel the world every day and return to report what they have seen. It is the motif most charged with meaning in the Nordic repertoire, and the most understated to wear as a stud.
The snake evokes Jörmungandr, the Midgard serpent, long enough to encircle the world and bite its own tail. On a hoop, the shape fits perfectly: the ring and the motif tell the same story. Other snake and dragon jewelry can be found in the Nordic dragons and snakes category.
The dragon, anchor, sword, and Nordic knot complete the collection, alongside motifs that are not part of Scandinavian mythology — skulls, octopuses, simple geometry — but belong to the same contemporary wardrobe.
Did Vikings wear earrings?
To be frank: hardly at all. The Scandinavian jewelry repertoire of the Viking Age is well documented, and it centers on brooches, torcs, arm rings, and finger rings. Excavations yield almost no earrings in a Nordic context.
The rare known examples come from contact zones with the Slavic and Byzantine worlds, along the Rus' trade routes, where the Varangians traveled down the rivers toward Constantinople. Wearing an earring with a Nordic motif is therefore a modern choice, not a historical reenactment — and we prefer to state this rather than claim otherwise.
Why stainless steel
An earring passes through the lobe: the material matters more than in any other type of jewelry. Stainless steel does not rust when exposed to sweat, does not tarnish like silver, and does not deform. It stands up to showering and sports without needing to be removed.
A common-sense piece of advice: if you have just had your ears pierced, wait for them to heal completely before wearing anything other than the starter studs provided by your piercer.
Care
Lukewarm water, a little mild soap, and a soft cloth to dry. Nothing else. Avoid chlorinated products and abrasive cleaners, which dull blackened and gold finishes. Store pairs flat, away from friction against other jewelry.
Viking earrings for men
For men, the safest rule is sobriety: a single ear, or a pair of flat studs that do not protrude from the lobe. The motif then matters more than the size. A raven, a Vegvísir, or a small-format Thor's hammer can be read up close and remain discreet from afar, making them suitable for both the office and the weekend.
The finish does the rest. Polished steel goes with everything; blackened steel hardens the motif and pairs well with a beard, a leather bracelet, or a dark ring. The closed hoop, worn alone, is the other masculine classic: its ring is visible without drawing too much attention to the face. Long dangles are for those who want a more expressive style, for concerts or festivals.
Viking earrings for women
For women, the dangle takes center stage: it moves, catches the light, and shows the entire motif. Valkyrie wings, coiled snakes, and miniature swords find their best form here. Models set with cubic zirconia add a touch of color — red, pink, or citrine depending on the pair — without leaving steel behind.
For daily wear, small studs remain the most comfortable: they do not pull on the lobe and do not catch on hair or scarves. Nothing stops you from mixing and matching: a stud on the lobe, a cuff higher up on the ear is the most current way to wear a Nordic motif.
Non-pierced: ear cuffs
An ear cuff does not pass through the skin: it is an open ring that slides onto the edge of the cartilage and stays in place through pressure. You put it on by sliding it from the lobe to the desired spot, then gently squeeze the opening between two fingers if it moves. It is suitable for non-pierced ears, and for those who want to try out a symbol before committing — even before getting it tattooed.
Two precautions: do not squeeze too hard, because compressed cartilage quickly becomes painful, and take it off before sleeping. Models that can be worn without piercing state so in their title.
Choosing size and weight
Three measurements count when choosing. For a stud, the width of the motif: under a centimeter, it remains discreet; beyond that, it becomes a noticeable piece. For a hoop, the inner diameter: a small ring hugs the lobe, a large one hangs and moves. For a dangle, the total length, to be compared with the distance between the lobe and the jaw.
Weight makes a difference by the end of the day. A thin lobe does not support a heavy dangle well: when in doubt, prefer an openwork motif or a thin hoop, and save large pieces for the evening.
Matching with other jewelry
An earring is rarely chosen alone. The simplest way is to repeat the motif of a piece of jewelry already worn: ravens on the ears and neck, a Thor's hammer as a stud and a pendant. The most elegant approach is to keep a single metal color near the face — all polished steel, or all blackened — and to stick to no more than two symbols. Beyond that, the ensemble becomes an inventory.
Matching pendants are in the Viking Necklace category, rings in the Viking Ring category, and all sets in the Viking Jewelry category.
Gifting Viking earrings
It is one of the easiest gifts to get right, because it does not involve the question of size. Two checks are enough: knowing if the person has pierced ears — if not, go for a cuff — and if they tend to wear light or dark jewelry, which their other pieces will tell you. For presentation, our luxury jewelry gift pouch can be ordered with the pair.
Frequently asked questions
Are the models sold individually or in pairs? This is specified on each product page. Many men wear only one, and several models are suitable for asymmetric wear.
Are they suitable for sensitive ears? Stainless steel is the best-tolerated material after titanium and gold. If you react to nickel, check the composition indicated on the page before ordering.
Do I need pierced ears? For studs and most hoops, yes. Some clip-on models can be worn without piercing — it is indicated on the product page when this is the case.
What are the delivery times and costs? Tracked delivery is free on all orders over €49, regardless of the country of delivery.
